Tradovate Broker Review

Tradovate Review 2026: Costs, Safety, Platforms and Who It Suits

The 60-Second Decision

Tradovate is a US futures broker built for traders who want web, desktop and mobile access, exchange-traded futures and options on futures, and several ways to price commissions. Its main practical appeal is the choice between a free pay-as-you-trade plan and paid memberships with lower per-contract rates.

This is not a conventional spot-forex or CFD account: currency exposure comes through futures, and stocks and ETFs are unavailable. There is no minimum deposit, but your balance must cover the margin on your contracts.

Product focusExchange-traded futures and options on futures, including currency, index, commodity, bond and crypto-futures exposure.
Pricing modelSubscription plus per-contract futures commission; exchange, clearing and NFA fees are additional.

Typical customerActive futures traders who want web or mobile access and a choice of commission plans.
Regulation structureUS entity: NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a Tradovate, regulated by the CFTC and NFA.
Trading complexityHigh: futures contracts expire, margin requirements vary, and overnight positions require exchange-set margin.

What materially distinguishes it?

Subscription choices change per-contract costs
Traders can choose a no-monthly-fee plan with higher per-side commissions or pay for a monthly or lifetime membership to access lower rates. The best fit depends on trading volume and the cost of additional exchange and regulatory fees.
Futures-focused markets
Currency, index, commodity, bond and crypto exposure comes mainly through futures and options on futures, rather than spot assets or direct stock and ETF ownership. Contract expiries and margin requirements shape the account's risks and costs.
Separate paths for API and desktop automation
Tradovate API access is a paid add-on requiring a funded account and a separate real-time market-data arrangement. NinjaScript/C# automation runs in NinjaTrader 8 desktop on Windows, so the right route depends on the tools a trader needs.

What We Tested — and What We Didn't

Tested directly

  • Withdrawal: We could not use ACH for a UK withdrawal, and a wire withdrawal was blocked because we had not funded by wire. After we contacted support, the treasury team manually approved the withdrawal the next day; the funds reached our bank two days later.
  • Desktop platform: During our test using a TradingView connection, we experienced a very delayed fill.
  • Order placement: We encountered several order-handling problems: a stop-loss disappeared while a take-profit appeared; closing a position became difficult; and one TradingView-connected order took about 15 minutes, with heavy slippage. Bracket orders left stray chart orders. A separate NQ trade coincided with severe chart and DOM slowdown, auto-liquidation and rejected attempts to re-enter.
  • Email support: We initially waited about a day for a treasury-team response. After phoning support, we received an email the same day.
  • Phone support: Support confirmed that the treasury team would follow up, and the issue was then resolved quickly.

Verified from primary sources

The NFA registration reference identifies NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a Tradovate under licence 0309379. Our trading and withdrawal results are separate from that registration information.

Not independently verified

Our individual order outcomes do not establish typical execution quality. We did not independently measure representative execution speeds or slippage rates, or assess broader performance across market conditions.

Account Pricing

AccountMinimum SpreadCommissionMinimum Deposit

MonthlyExchange bid/ask; discounted commissions vs FreeStandard contracts: $0.99 per side; Micro E-minis: $0.29 per side.$99/month membership plus trading funds
LifetimeExchange bid/ask; very low commissions (e.g. micros from ~$0.09/side cited)Standard contracts: $0.59 per side; Micro E-minis: $0.09 per side.$1,499 one-time membership plus trading funds

These are per-side commissions, so a completed buy-and-sell trade doubles the quoted rate. Exchange, clearing and NFA fees are additional and vary by contract. The exchange bid/ask is the relevant spread measure; these plans do not quote a fixed pip spread.

What the headline number doesn't tell you

$0 minimum deposit: There is no minimum amount required to open or fund an account, but that does not mean every balance can support a live position. Your account needs enough funds for the contract's margin, with additional room to manage price movements and avoid liquidation.

The membership choice changes the economics for active traders. Compare the monthly or lifetime charge with the per-side savings for the contracts and trade frequency you expect. The Free plan has no monthly membership charge, but its commissions are higher and a $35 inactivity fee can apply if you log in without placing a live trade during a calendar month. Paid Monthly and Lifetime accounts are exempt from that inactivity fee.

Cost most worth watching

For frequent traders, compare the membership fee against the per-contract savings and remember that exchange, clearing and NFA charges remain additional. For occasional users on the Free plan, the calendar-month inactivity rule is the charge most likely to change the cost of keeping the account open.

NFA0309379United StatesUS futures/retail-forex rules apply; product scope differs from CFD entities. Futures/forex accounts do not receive the same protections as securities accounts.

These registrations identify NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a Tradovate as the contracting entity. US futures regulation applies, not a securities-broker protection framework.

Why the entity matters

As a futures broker, Tradovate manages margin under futures rules rather than a fixed percentage-based forex stop-out. Intraday margins can be below exchange initial margin, but overnight positions must meet the higher exchange requirement. Tradovate offers no negative balance protection, and futures accounts are not covered by SIPC.

Client Protection

Tradovate says client funds are segregated from the firm's operating capital, while customer money may be held in commingled customer accounts. The broker says it may invest customer funds in approved instruments such as US government securities or money market mutual funds. Commingling can expose customers to a shortfall if a severe deficit in the customer account is not covered. Futures accounts do not receive SIPC protection, and Tradovate does not offer negative balance protection; a fast market move can leave an account with a deficit for which the customer is liable.

Tradovate generally liquidates positions when account equity falls below required margin, but rapid price gaps or slippage can still create losses. Regulation and segregation do not remove the risks of leveraged futures trading.

Where the range is strongest

The core offering is exchange-traded futures, including roughly 50 commodity instruments and markets in indices, currencies and interest rates. Options are available on futures; live contracts vary by product, strike and expiry.

Where it is limited

Tradovate does not offer stocks or ETFs, and its currency and crypto exposure is through futures rather than spot assets. Futures contracts expire and margin requirements can change, so product access comes with contract and margin considerations that differ from direct ownership.

Core Experience

Tradovate's futures tools include DOM/market depth, one-click order entry, bracket and OCO orders, server-side multi-brackets and a volume histogram. Simulated trading, market replay and TPO are also listed among its tools. Tradovate offers a cloud-based market replay tool for reviewing past sessions.

Advanced Features

Tradovate supports API trading through REST and WebSocket connections. API access requires a live, funded brokerage account with at least $1,000 and a $25-per-month API Access add-on. Real-time market data is not included in the standard API subscription; a separate CME sub-vendor agreement is required for real-time data through the API. The API limit is 5,000 unique actions per 60-minute period.

NinjaTrader 8 desktop supports NinjaScript/C# automated strategies. Tradovate's native Group Trade copies trades among accounts you own and manage at Tradovate, but does not support ATM/bracket strategies or copying to or from external brokerages. It is available on Tradovate Web and Desktop, not the mobile app.

Mobile Experience

Tradovate has dedicated iOS and Android apps for manual trading, position monitoring, alerts and account management. The mobile client is distinct from the desktop and web interfaces, and API-based developer workflows are separate.

Main Platform Trade-Off

Best aspect: Futures-focused order tools are available across a cloud-based platform, while API workflows and NinjaTrader desktop automation provide routes for more customized trading.

Main friction point: Automation depends on the platform: NinjaScript runs only in NinjaTrader 8 on Windows, while Tradovate API access costs extra and requires a separate market-data arrangement.

Account Opening

Tradovate requires KYC checks for live accounts. Applicants can expect to provide government-issued photo identification, proof of address, employment and financial details, source of risk capital, trading experience, and a tax identification number. US citizens provide an SSN; non-US citizens provide an ITIN or taxpayer ID.

A live account has no minimum deposit, but the balance must be sufficient for the margin on the contracts traded. Tradovate also offers a demo account; its simulated trading account includes 14 days of access to $50,000 in practice funds, live market data and platform features.

Execution and Trading Conditions

4.5/5

Tradovate is a futures broker, so leverage is implicit in contract margin rather than a fixed retail ratio. Margin depends on the contract and whether a position is intraday or held overnight. Micro contracts can have intraday margins as low as $50 per contract, while overnight positions must meet the higher exchange initial margin. Margin requirements can also rise before major economic announcements; Tradovate's terms describe possible increases to as much as four times standard intraday rates 15 minutes before events such as CPI or Non-Farm Payrolls.

Positions are subject to automatic liquidation if account equity falls below the required margin. Tradovate describes an execution fee for a margin violation, usually $25 for the first violation and $50 for subsequent violations. Traders can set daily or weekly loss limits and trailing maximum drawdown controls in account settings. Scalping and news trading are allowed on live individual accounts, although execution can slip on exchange-traded products and high-impact releases can bring heavy slippage or fill issues.

Tradovate does not allow simultaneous long and short positions in the same futures contract within one account; an opposing order offsets the existing position. Traders may use different correlated contracts, futures options or separate accounts as alternative ways to manage exposure. Prop-firm evaluation and funded accounts can have rules set by the relevant firm.

There is no standardized percentage-based margin-call level. The applicable margin and liquidation rules depend on the contract, session and account arrangement. Tradovate's futures margin framework should not be treated as a fixed-leverage promise.

Before You Open an Account

Check these three things first

  1. Your legal entity: Confirm that your account is with NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a Tradovate and understand the US futures protections and product scope.
  2. Your likely trading cost: Compare the membership charge with your expected per-side commissions, then add exchange, clearing and NFA fees. If you use the Free plan, account for the inactivity-fee conditions.
  3. Your product and margin requirements: Check that futures and options on futures meet your needs, and calculate the intraday or overnight margin for your intended contracts.

Bottom line

Tradovate is best suited to active futures traders seeking a choice of commission plans and web, desktop or mobile access. Its futures-only focus and changing margin requirements may make another account structure a better fit.
