City Index Review 2026: Costs, Safety, Platforms and Who It Suits
The 60-Second Decision
City Index is best suited to experienced CFD and spread-betting traders who value a choice of WebTrader, TradingView and MT4, alongside market research and a broad range of derivative markets. Most non-share CFD costs are built into floating spreads; share CFDs can add commission.
The practical trade-offs are the entity-specific account rules and the cost of holding leveraged positions overnight. City Index officially has no universal minimum deposit to open a standard account, but the first card deposit is subject to a minimum of 100 units of the account’s base currency.

Broker Profile
| Dimension | Profile |
|---|---|
| Main business model | Market maker offering spread betting and CFDs. |
| Product focus | Forex, indices, stocks, commodities, cryptocurrencies, bonds and derivative products. |
| Pricing model | Spread-based CFDs, with share-CFD commission. Most other listed CFD categories are commission-free; spread betting is commission-free. |
| Automation support | MT4 Expert Advisors and API trading are supported. TradingView supports broker-connected trading; unattended automation requires a compatible API or bridge. |
| Typical customer | Experienced CFD and spread-betting traders seeking research, advanced charting or algorithmic tools. |
| Regulation structure | Multi-entity, with regulatory jurisdictions including the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and the Cayman Islands. |
| Trading complexity | High: leveraged derivatives, product-specific financing and different retail and professional leverage limits require active risk and cost management. |
What materially distinguishes it?
- Spread betting and CFDs
- City Index offers both spread betting and CFDs, giving eligible traders a choice of derivative format. Spread betting is commission-free across markets, while most CFDs are priced through spreads and share CFDs can add commission.
- MT4 automation and API access
- MT4 Expert Advisors and API trading support automated strategies, while VPS hosting can keep MT4 strategies running during trading hours. This is relevant to traders building or operating systematic workflows, though full MT4 automation is desktop/VPS-centric.
- Entity- and client-specific trading rules
- Leverage, product access and protections vary by jurisdiction and retail or professional classification. Traders need to identify their contracting entity before comparing account terms or assuming that a headline leverage limit applies to them.

What We Tested — and What We Didn't
Tested directly
- Web platform: In our test, charts and portfolio management were easy to use, and PC watchlists were straightforward to manage. The charting felt clunky.
- Desktop platform: On PC, we liked the watchlists but found the charting tool buggy.
- Mobile app: The app worked well when stable, but recurring bugs interrupted use. Phone charting felt clunky.
- Order placement and access: During the July 2024 outage, we were locked out while open trades needed attention. We could not access live chat and spent about an hour on the phone before the call cut off.
Verified from primary sources
We checked regulator records for the listed UK, Australian, Cyprus/EEA and Singapore entities and their licence details. The applicable legal entity matters: client protections and product rules vary by jurisdiction and client classification.
Not independently verified
We did not independently measure average execution speed, slippage, rejection rates or typical spreads across trading sessions. The July 2024 outage and support experience were specific to our test, not a measure of normal service.
03
What Does It Actually Cost?
City Index uses floating spreads. For the listed account types, the lowest published FX minimum is 0.5 pips; this is a minimum, not a typical spread. The quoted average EUR/USD spread is 0.8 pips and the average GBP/USD spread is 1.2 pips. These figures describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Account Pricing
| Account | Minimum Spread | Commission | Minimum Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accredited Investor | Instrument-specific; no separate numeric account minimum published | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | Not separately published |
| Corporate | From 0.5 pips on FX (lowest published instrument minimum) | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | About £50,000 on cited corporate onboarding page |
| MT4 | From 0.5 pips on FX (lowest published instrument minimum) | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | About £100 cited for MT4 funding on current materials |
| Premium | Instrument-specific; no separate numeric account minimum published | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | Not separately published |
| Professional | From 0.5 pips on FX (lowest published instrument minimum) | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | No separate pricing minimum; eligibility required |
| Standard | From 0.5 pips on FX (lowest published instrument minimum) | Varies by product; share CFDs can carry commission. | No universal minimum published |
Indices, forex, commodities and bonds are generally commission-free, with costs built into the spread. Spread betting is commission-free across markets. Share CFDs carry commission plus the market spread: UK and European shares usually cost 0.08% of trade value, with a £10 or €10 minimum; US shares usually cost 1.8 cents per share, with a $10 minimum; and Asian shares start at around 0.08%, with a $10 SGD minimum. Rates vary by region and product.
What the headline number doesn’t tell you
A minimum spread is not a guarantee of the spread available when you trade. City Index quotes average spreads of 0.8 pips for EUR/USD and 1.2 pips for GBP/USD, while market conditions can affect floating spreads. A commission-free description also does not mean a cost-free trade: spreads and, for positions held overnight, financing remain relevant.
Non-Trading Costs
| Fee | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | - | - |
| Withdrawal | - | - |
| Inactivity | Inactivity fee: £12 per month after 12 months in UK; $15 equivalent on inactive CFD accounts in Singapore; $15 per month after 24 months in Australia. | Triggered by the inactivity period and account conditions stated here: Inactivity fee: £12 per month after 12 months in UK; $15 equivalent on inactive CFD accounts in Singapore; $15 per month after 24 months in Australia. |
| Currency conversion | A currency-conversion cost or markup can apply when the deposit, withdrawal, instrument, profit/loss, or settlement currency differs from the account base currency. The exact rate usually depends on entity, product and conversion route. | Applies when a deposit, withdrawal, instrument, P/L or settlement currency differs from the account base currency; rate varies by entity, product and conversion route. |
Cost most worth watching
For leveraged CFD and spread-betting positions held beyond the daily cut-off, overnight financing can become a material recurring cost. City Index describes daily financing as generally based on the relevant benchmark rate plus or minus 2.5%; long positions are debited, while short positions may be credited depending on rates. Futures do not incur overnight financing because carry is built into the spread.
04
Is City Index Regulated and Safe?
City Index operates through separate legal entities, so the regulator and protections depend on the client’s location and contracting entity. The account agreement names the entity holding the account.
Legal Entity Map
| Regulator | License Number | Jurisdiction | Main Protections |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASIC | 345646 | Australian clients | Australian retail clients are subject to ASIC CFD product-intervention rules, including leverage caps, 50% margin close-out, negative-balance protection and restrictions on trading inducements. Professional clients do not receive all retail protections. |
| CySEC | CySEC licence 400/21 | EEA / Cyprus | Cyprus/EEA MiFID framework applies. Retail leverage/product rules and investor-protection/complaint arrangements differ from offshore entities; compensation eligibility depends on the entity and client. |
| FCA | FCA FRN 446717 | United Kingdom clients | UK FCA framework applies to this entity. Retail-client leverage/product rules, client-money safeguards and complaint/compensation routes can differ from offshore entities; eligibility rules apply. |
| MAS | MAS Capital Markets Services licence | Singapore clients | Singapore regulatory framework applies. Available products, eligibility and client-money/custody rules follow the Singapore entity and can differ from other group entities. |
The named contracting entities are StoneX Financial Pty Ltd for Australian clients, StoneX Europe Ltd for Cyprus/EEA clients, StoneX Financial Ltd for UK clients and StoneX Financial Pte. Ltd. for Singapore clients. The licence and rule descriptions above are jurisdiction-specific; they should not be read as identical protections across all accounts.
Client Protection
City Index says client funds are segregated from its operating funds. Retail clients receive negative-balance protection, which the broker describes as limiting losses to deposited funds; this protection does not apply to Professional Trader accounts. Eligible UK clients may have FSCS investment protection up to £85,000 per person, per firm if the regulated firm fails. Eligibility rules apply. Regulation and these safeguards do not remove market, leverage or counterparty risk.
05
What Can You Actually Trade?
City Index’s listed markets are accessed through leveraged derivatives. CFD exposure to shares does not give the trader ownership or voting rights. Crypto exposure is also through derivatives rather than ownership of coins in a wallet, and availability can depend on jurisdiction.
| Asset Class | Available | Approx. Number | Maximum Retail Leverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forex | Yes | 84 | 1:30 |
| Crypto | Yes | 8 | N/A — professional-only in UK |
| Stocks | Yes | 4700 | 1:5 |
| Indices | Yes | 40 | 1:20 |

| ETFs | Yes | Entity/platform dependent — count not published | 1:5 |
| Options | No | Not Offered | - |
| Bonds | Yes | 14 | 1:5 |
Where the range is strongest
The share-CFD range is the largest listed category at approximately 4,700 instruments, followed by 84 forex pairs. These counts describe market access, not direct ownership of the underlying shares or currencies.
Where it is limited
ETF access depends on the legal entity, and the listed offering has no standard retail options product. Crypto trading is professional-only in the UK. Retail leverage is capped by product and client classification; higher professional limits require eligibility.

Core Experience
WebTrader provides browser-based manual trading and charting. TradingView combines advanced charting and alerts with broker-connected trading. MT4 is the relevant option for MQL4 Expert Advisors and custom indicators, with full automation centered on its desktop or VPS environment.
Advanced Features
City Index supports API trading, MT4 Expert Advisors and VPS hosting for running automated strategies. TradingView is available for charting and broker-connected trading, but a Pine strategy alone does not provide universal unattended execution through the broker. City Index does not offer a standalone social or copy-trading service.
Mobile Experience
TradingView and MT4 are available on iOS and Android, alongside City Index mobile apps. The platform options allow traders to access mobile trading, while MT4 automation remains centered on desktop or VPS.
Main Platform Trade-Off
Best aspect: The choice of browser-based trading, TradingView charting and MT4 automation supports different manual and algorithmic workflows.
Main friction point: Full MT4 Expert Advisor functionality requires a desktop or VPS environment, and TradingView strategies do not automatically provide universal live execution.
07
Opening, Funding and Withdrawing From the Account
Account Opening
City Index requires identity verification for anti-money-laundering and financial-conduct purposes. It first attempts electronic checks; if those fail, it may request a valid passport, national identity card or photocard driving licence, plus proof of address dated within the last three months, such as a utility bill, council tax bill, bank statement or mortgage statement.
The standard account has no universal minimum deposit to open, although the initial card deposit has a minimum of 100 units of the account’s base currency. Later deposits have a minimum of 25 units. Bank transfers have no minimum limit. Account terms and eligibility depend on account type and legal entity.
Deposits and Withdrawals
| Method | Deposit Time | Withdrawal Time | Deposit Fee | Withdrawal Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank transfer | same day to 3 business days | 1–2 working days for domestic bank transfer | No broker fee generally, bank/provider charges may apply | No broker fee |
| Cards | Immediate | 3–5 working days | Entity/region dependent: UK generally free, some entities apply card-processor fees | No broker fee |
| PayPal | Not publicly specified as a current supported funding route on the reviewed City Index funding page | Method-specific | Not publicly specified as a current supported funding route on the reviewed City Index funding page | No broker fee |
| Cryptos | - | - | - | - |
Deposits are accepted by Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and wire transfer; withdrawals are supported by Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, wire transfer and PayPal. City Index lists AUD, CHF, EUR, GBP, PLN, SGD and USD as account base currencies. Deposits are generally made in the account’s base currency; conversions may incur charges.
Standard withdrawals are generally fee-free at the broker, but a same-day CHAPS withdrawal under £5,000 costs £25. Card withdrawals typically take 3–5 working days; a domestic bank transfer typically takes 1–2 working days, while international transfers can take longer. Bank or payment-provider processing and settlement can affect the time funds reach the receiving account.
City Index restricts clients from the United States, Canada, Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Cuba, Myanmar, Russia, Brazil and Hong Kong. Check eligibility and the contracting entity for your location before applying.
08
Execution and Trading Conditions
City Index identifies its business model as market maker. Its spreads are floating, so trading costs can change with market conditions. During high-impact news, the broker says reduced liquidity and higher volatility can widen spreads; slippage or order delays may also occur.
Retail leverage depends on the product and regulatory entity. The listed maximums are 1:30 for forex, 1:20 for indices and commodities, and 1:5 for stocks and bonds. UK retail crypto trading is professional-only. Professional accounts can access higher leverage, including up to 1:400 on major forex pairs, subject to eligibility and applicable entity rules. Negative-balance protection does not apply to Professional Trader accounts.
City Index permits scalping and hedging. To keep simultaneous long and short positions on the same market, the trader must select the hedge option; otherwise, an opposite trade reduces or closes the existing position. City Index also supports API trading and MT4 automated strategies. Margin calls are listed at 75–100%, with a 50% stop-out margin level; applicable rules can depend on account and entity.
Slippage can be positive or negative. The broker describes its platforms as offering execution technology, but no independent execution-speed or slippage-rate measurement is provided here. Traders using short-term or news-driven strategies should account for variable spreads, slippage and financing rather than assuming a fixed execution cost.
09

Before You Open an Account
Check these three things first
- Your legal entity: Confirm which City Index entity will hold your account and which regulator’s rules, protections and product restrictions apply.
- Your likely trading cost: Compare the spread you expect to face with any share-CFD commission, overnight financing and currency conversion charges. Include inactivity fees if you may leave the account unused.
- Your product/account requirements: Check that your intended markets, account type, funding method and client classification are available in your jurisdiction. Professional status can change leverage and protections.
Bottom line
City Index is primarily suited to traders seeking CFDs or spread betting across multiple markets with a choice of TradingView, MT4 and WebTrader. Entity-specific rules and the ongoing costs of leveraged positions are the main points to check before opening an account.
