Interactive Brokers Review 2026: Costs, Safety, Platforms and Who It Suits
The 60-Second Decision
Interactive Brokers is best suited to active traders and global multi-asset investors who can make use of its access to international markets, advanced order tools and API trading. Its execution-only, direct-market-access model and product-specific commissions are a different proposition from a spread-led retail forex account.
Its breadth of markets and instruments is a key advantage. The trade-off is complexity: Trader Workstation is built for advanced workflows, while protections, leverage and product access depend on the account’s legal entity.
Before opening an account, identify your contracting entity and estimate the full cost of your chosen products, including commissions, currency conversion and financing charges.

Broker Profile
| Dimension | Profile |
|---|---|
| Main business model | Execution-only electronic broker offering direct market access to retail and institutional clients. |
| Product focus | Multi-asset: stocks, ETFs, options, funds, futures, forex, bonds, commodities and structured products. |
| Pricing model | Product- and venue-specific fixed or tiered commissions; forex uses a low basis-point commission rather than an added dealing spread. |
| Automation support | TWS API, Client Portal/Web API and FIX API support automated trading and account workflows, subject to the relevant interface and account. |
| Typical customer | Active, professional and institutional traders, as well as global investors seeking multi-asset access. |
| Regulation structure | Multiple legal entities regulated across jurisdictions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, Australia and Canada. |
| Trading complexity | High for advanced workflows: TWS offers extensive trading tools, while IBKR Desktop and GlobalTrader provide simpler interfaces. |
What materially distinguishes it?
- Multi-asset direct market access
- The broker combines access to direct securities and derivatives across global markets, which can let investors manage different asset classes through one account structure, subject to entity and product eligibility.
- Multiple API routes
- TWS API, Client Portal/Web API and FIX API support different automation needs, from trading workflows to web applications and institutional development. The TWS API requires a TWS or IB Gateway connection.
- Product-specific commission pricing
- Fixed or tiered commissions vary by product and venue, while forex uses a basis-point commission model. Traders need to calculate costs for their own instruments rather than rely on one headline spread.

What We Tested — and What We Didn't
Tested directly
- Account verification: In our test, the account was verified but remained restricted. Support repeated information, and we could not establish what further step was needed.
- Withdrawal: We requested a $100 test withdrawal. It was still pending around six weeks later.
- Desktop and API setup: The API route required us to build or use our own software, making setup more complex.
- Mobile access: We encountered a QR/2FA error while trying to access the account.
- Email support: We opened tickets about the withdrawal but did not feel we received a response.
Verified from primary sources
Regulator and licensing references identify entities serving clients in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Japan. The applicable entity and protections depend on the client’s location and account.
Not independently verified
Our account and platform checks do not establish typical execution speed, slippage rates, liquidity quality or how often the reported withdrawal delay occurs. Slippage can depend on the order and available liquidity. The legal protections described for each entity should not be treated as protection against market losses.
03
What Does It Actually Cost?
Interactive Brokers uses product- and venue-specific commissions rather than one universal spread or trading fee. Pricing can be fixed or tiered, and rates differ between IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro as well as by jurisdiction. The figures below describe the broad pricing structure, not a single rate that applies to every account.
Account Pricing
| Account | Minimum Spread | Commission | Minimum Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | N/A – no account-level spread | Varies by product and pricing plan | $0 for most retail/entity accounts |
| Joint | N/A – no account-level spread | Varies by product and pricing plan | $0 for most retail/entity accounts |
Forex spreads are floating, and spot currencies are priced through commissions rather than an added dealing spread. The reported average EUR/USD spread is 0.31 pips and GBP/USD is 0.42 pips; these averages are not minimum spreads and do not replace the applicable commission schedule.
IBKR Lite offers $0 commissions on US-listed stocks and ETFs. IBKR Pro charges commissions; one stated example is $0.005 per US share with a $1 minimum per order, while tiered rates depend on volume. Other products have their own schedules. Mutual funds typically carry a fee of about $14.95 or up to 3% of the transaction value. Global equities and bonds carry localized fees that depend on exchange and pricing model.
What the Headline Number Doesn't Tell You
$0 commissions on US-listed shares
What that doesn't tell you:
IBKR Lite’s $0 commission applies to US-listed stocks and ETFs. IBKR Pro charges commissions, and rates for other products and venues differ. Currency conversion and other applicable costs can still affect the overall cost of an international trade.
$0 minimum deposit
A standard retail Cash or Margin account can be opened with no minimum deposit. Using margin is different: a $2,000 USD balance, or non-USD equivalent, is required to borrow or use leverage. Individual assets may also have their own trade minimums.
Non-Trading Costs
| Fee | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | - | - |
| Withdrawal | Two withdrawal requests per calendar month are free. Additional withdrawals are charged according to the withdrawal method and currency, and third-party bank fees may also apply. | Withdrawal conditions are method/account specific: Two withdrawal requests per calendar month are free. | Inactivity | - | - |
| Currency conversion | Currency conversion carries a trading cost. Spot FX commissions are typically charged as a small basis-point rate on trade value, while automatic conversions can use a separate conversion charge. | Currency-conversion conditions: Currency conversion carries a trading cost. Overnight financing is another potential cost for eligible positions. Margin borrowing, leveraged products and spot forex can incur or receive interest or swap charges depending on the instrument, position, direction, rates and holding period. Futures and futures options may also incur an overnight position fee.
Cost most worth watching
For an international investor, account for currency conversion as well as the commission on the security. For leveraged or overnight positions, check the applicable financing rate before holding the trade; costs depend on the product and account.
04
Is Interactive Brokers Regulated and Safe?
Interactive Brokers operates through multiple regulated entities. The legal entity on your account matters: it determines the applicable rules, product access and investor-protection arrangements. Regulatory protection does not remove market or trading risk.
Legal Entity Map
| Regulator | License Number | Jurisdiction | Main Protections |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASIC | 453554 | Australian clients | Australian retail CFD rules apply where the client is retail, including leverage limits, margin close-out and negative-balance protections; professional-client treatment differs. |
| CBI | C423427 | EEA clients routed to Interactive Brokers Ireland | Irish/EEA regulatory framework applies; retail product-intervention rules and EEA investor protections differ from offshore entities. |
| CFTC | CFTC-registered FCM/RFED | United States | US futures/retail-forex rules apply; product scope differs from CFD entities. Futures/forex accounts do not receive the same protections as securities accounts. |
| CIRO | CIRO Investment Dealer | Canadian clients | Canadian investment-dealer rules apply; product availability, margin and investor-protection arrangements follow Canadian requirements and differ from offshore CFD entities. |
| DFSA | F008423 | Dubai International Financial Centre / eligible regional clients | DIFC/DFSA framework applies. Permitted client categories and services depend on the entity's DFSA permissions; protections differ from UK/EU/Australian retail regimes. |
| FCA | 208159 | United Kingdom clients routed to IBUK | UK entity rules apply. Some protections depend on which IB affiliate actually holds the asset/cash, so do not assume every position is covered by the same compensation scheme. |
| FINRA | CRD 36418 | United States | US broker-dealer/securities rules apply. SIPC protection may apply to eligible securities accounts; it does not protect against market losses. |
| JFSA | Kanto Local Finance Bureau (FIBO) No.187 | Japanese clients | Japanese-domiciled clients are served by Interactive Brokers Securities Japan Inc. under Kanto Local Finance Bureau registration No.187. Japan-specific investor-protection, product and dispute-resolution arrangements apply. |
| SEC | 8-47257 | United States | US broker-dealer/securities rules apply. SIPC protection may apply to eligible securities accounts; it does not protect against market losses. |
| SFC | ADI249 | Hong Kong clients | Hong Kong SFC rules apply. Product scope and investor-compensation eligibility depend on the licensed activities and the products traded. |
Why the entity matters
Australian clients are served by Interactive Brokers Australia Pty Ltd. EEA clients routed to the Irish entity contract with Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited; UK clients routed to IBUK contract with Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited. Other entities include Interactive Brokers LLC in the United States, Interactive Brokers Canada Inc., Interactive Brokers Hong Kong Limited and Interactive Brokers Securities Japan Inc. The assigned entity determines the regulatory framework.
Leverage, negative-balance treatment, investor compensation and product access are not uniform across those frameworks. US securities accounts and US futures/forex accounts also do not have identical protections. Check the contracting entity and the account-specific terms before funding.
Client Protection
Interactive Brokers says it segregates client funds and securities from its corporate assets and calculates client obligations daily. It describes client assets as generally held in segregated omnibus accounts. The broker also notes that segregation applies to fully owned assets; assets affected by a margin loan or participation in the Stock Yield Enhancement Program are exceptions.
Protection depends on the entity and account. The stated examples include SIPC in the United States, with protection up to $500,000 including $250,000 for cash, and FSCS/ICS-type schemes in some other jurisdictions. Negative-balance protection also depends on jurisdiction, client classification and product. In some retail regimes it applies to leveraged products such as CFDs; professional clients and certain US accounts may not receive the same protection. Automated risk controls can liquidate positions when margin requirements are breached, but they do not eliminate the possibility of losses.
05
What Can You Actually Trade?
Interactive Brokers offers access to several asset classes, but product counts do not represent a uniform form of exposure. Stocks and ETFs can be held directly; forex, futures, options and other derivatives have distinct contract and margin terms. Access depends on eligibility, location and affiliate.
| Asset Class | Available | Approx. Number | Maximum Retail Leverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forex | Yes | 100 | Up to 1:30 for retail FX CFDs; varies by pair/entity |
| Crypto | Yes | 11 | Varies by product; spot vs futures |
| Stocks | Yes | 8500 | 1:2 |
| Indices | Yes | 13 | Varies by contract |
| Commodities | Yes | 2 | Varies by contract |
| ETFs | Yes | ≈13,000 | 1:4 intraday / 1:2 overnight |
| Options | Yes | ≈34 markets | Varies by strategy/contract |
| Bonds | Yes | 1,000,000+ | Varies by bond/security |
Where the range is strongest
The range includes direct securities and derivatives, from stocks, ETFs and bonds to options, futures, funds and currencies. The bond marketplace and global options access stand out by product count. Fractional trading is available for eligible US, Canadian and European stocks, with investments from USD 1.
Where it is limited
Product availability is not identical across countries or affiliates. Crypto spot access is limited to eligible clients and regions, and CFDs are available only through eligible affiliates. Leverage varies by product, jurisdiction and account; listed maximums should not be treated as a standard margin setting for every client.

| GlobalTrader | No — as named mobile app | No — as named mobile app | Yes | Simplified mobile global investing and trading. |
Core Experience
TWS is the most configurable, advanced option in the platform suite, with advanced order types, algorithmic tools, scanners, Level II market depth where subscription is required, and BookTrader. IBKR Desktop is intended to provide a more streamlined desktop experience, while Client Portal supports browser-based account management and lighter trading.
Advanced Features
IBKR supports API trading. The TWS API connects through TWS or IB Gateway and supports languages including Python, Java, C++, and C#. The Client Portal/Web API supports custom web applications and automated tasks; FIX API is designed for institutional and professional developers. Paper trading can be used to test API strategies. Copying trades is not a built-in one-click retail social feature; users may use APIs or third-party trade copiers.
IBKR does not offer its own VPS hosting, but its platforms work with third-party VPS services. Interactive Advisors offers portfolios managed by registered financial advisers and algorithmic strategies as an investment service.
Mobile Experience
IBKR Mobile is available on iOS and Android for trading, account management and portfolio monitoring. GlobalTrader provides a simpler mobile-first interface for global investing. Both sit alongside the more advanced TWS desktop environment rather than replacing it.
Main Platform Trade-Off
Best aspect: The suite covers advanced desktop trading, simpler desktop and mobile workflows, browser access and several API routes.
Main friction point: TWS has a steep learning curve, and API automation requires a separate interface and, for the TWS API, an active TWS or IB Gateway connection.
07
Opening, Funding and Withdrawing From the Account
Account Opening
New accounts require KYC verification. Applicants provide government-issued identification and proof of residence, and answer questions about trading experience, income, net worth and employment. These details are used to assess risk profile and eligibility for financial products. A $0 minimum deposit applies to standard retail Cash and Margin accounts, but using margin requires at least $2,000 USD or the non-USD equivalent.
A demo account is available. Account types include Individual, Joint, Trust, IRA, UGMA/UTMA, Advisor, Family Office, Small Business, Broker, Proprietary Trading Group, Fund and Institutional.

08
Execution and Trading Conditions
Interactive Brokers describes its business as execution-only and offers direct market access, with IB SmartRouting used for order routing. The broker also provides advanced order types and algorithmic tools. Slippage can occur depending on order and liquidity; it is not a fixed charge or a guarantee of a particular execution outcome.
Leverage depends on product, account and jurisdiction. The stated maximum across products ranges from 2:1 to 50:1, while retail FX CFD leverage can be up to 1:30 depending on pair and entity. Standard Reg T stock margin typically corresponds to 2:1; portfolio margin uses a risk-based calculation and can allow higher effective leverage on some portfolios. Margin requirements may rise around market closes, weekends or high-volatility events.
IBKR does not use a traditional fixed-percentage stop-out level or give conventional margin calls with time to add funds. The broker says its system monitors maintenance margin in real time and may automatically liquidate positions when excess liquidity reaches or falls below zero. During regular trading hours, Soft Edge Margin may allow a temporary deficit of up to 10% of Net Liquidation Value before liquidation is triggered. Clients should not assume they will have time to transfer funds after a margin deficiency.
Scalping and hedging are allowed. US-based margin accounts below $25,000 are subject to the stated Pattern Day Trader restriction of three day trades in a rolling five-day period. Real-time market-data subscriptions may also be needed for active trading tools. Overnight costs depend on the product: margin borrowing, spot forex, leveraged positions and some futures positions can incur financing or other holding charges.
09
Research, Education and Support

Research tools include market news, trading ideas, an economic calendar, market scanners and price charts. Trader Workstation and IBKR Desktop provide access to trading and market tools, with market-depth subscriptions required where applicable. Interactive Brokers says its platforms carry news from more than 60 sources, including Bloomberg, Morningstar and Zacks, and describes additional overnight equity access and AI news summaries.
Education
Educational resources include the IBKR Academy, courses, webinars, articles and guides. These can help users learn about the broker’s products and tools, though the platform’s advanced workflows may still require time to learn.

Before You Open an Account
Check these three things first
- Your legal entity: Confirm which Interactive Brokers entity will hold your account and which regulatory and compensation arrangements apply to your client category and products.
- Your likely trading cost: Estimate commissions, currency conversion and financing or overnight charges for your planned trades.
- Your product/account requirements: Check that the instruments and features you need are available through your entity, and remember that using margin requires a $2,000 USD balance or equivalent.
Bottom line
Interactive Brokers is primarily suited to active traders and global multi-asset investors who can use its market access and advanced tools. Platform complexity and entity-specific product, leverage and protection rules are the main practical considerations before opening an account.
